Sod Installation Cost in Houston: What to Expect in 2026

If you're staring at a patchy, sun-scorched lawn and thinking about starting fresh with new sod, the first question on your mind is probably: how much is this going to cost? Here in Houston, sod installation pricing depends on your grass type, yard size, soil condition, and whether you hire a professional crew or go the DIY route.

We install sod across the Greater Houston area every week, so here's an honest breakdown of what you should budget for in 2026.

Cost Per Square Foot by Grass Type

Not all sod is priced the same. The variety you choose has a major impact on your total project cost.

St. Augustine — $0.90 to $1.50 per sq ft (installed)

St. Augustine is far and away the most popular grass in Houston. It handles our humid subtropical climate well, tolerates partial shade under live oaks and pecans, and gives you that thick, lush carpet look. The Raleigh and Palmetto cultivars are the go-to choices for most Houston yards. Floratam is cheaper but needs full sun and struggles under tree canopies.

Bermuda — $0.80 to $1.30 per sq ft (installed)

Bermuda is the budget-friendly option and the toughest grass for full-sun yards. If you have a wide-open lot in Katy, Pearland, or League City with minimal shade, Bermuda gives you excellent wear resistance for less money. Tifway 419 and Celebration are the most common varieties installed in our area. The tradeoff: Bermuda goes dormant and turns brown in winter.

Zoysia — $1.50 to $2.50 per sq ft (installed)

Zoysia is the premium choice. Palisades and Emerald Zoysia deliver a dense, fine-textured lawn that feels great underfoot. It's more drought-tolerant than St. Augustine and handles moderate shade. The higher price reflects slower sod farm production and strong demand from homeowners who want a manicured look.

Total Project Cost for a Typical Houston Yard

Most Houston residential lots have between 4,000 and 6,000 square feet of lawn area (after subtracting the house footprint, driveway, patio, and flower beds). Here's what that translates to:

| Grass Type | 4,000 sq ft | 5,000 sq ft | 6,000 sq ft | |---|---|---|---| | St. Augustine | $3,600 – $6,000 | $4,500 – $7,500 | $5,400 – $9,000 | | Bermuda | $3,200 – $5,200 | $4,000 – $6,500 | $4,800 – $7,800 | | Zoysia | $6,000 – $10,000 | $7,500 – $12,500 | $9,000 – $15,000 |

These ranges include sod material, delivery, soil prep, grading, installation labor, and initial watering.

What's Included in a Professional Installation Price

When you get a quote from a reputable Houston sod company, the price should cover:

  • Site assessment — checking drainage, soil condition, and sun/shade patterns
  • Old lawn removal — stripping dead grass, weeds, and debris
  • Soil preparation — tilling, grading for proper drainage, and adding topsoil or compost amendments if needed
  • Sod delivery and installation — laying the rolls tightly with staggered seams
  • Initial watering — soaking the new sod immediately after installation
  • Post-installation instructions — a watering schedule tailored to your grass type and the time of year

If a quote doesn't specify what's included, ask. Some low-ball quotes skip soil prep entirely, which almost guarantees problems down the road.

Hidden Costs Most Homeowners Miss

Irrigation Repairs or Installation

New sod needs consistent water — about 1 inch per day for the first two weeks. If your sprinkler system has dead zones, broken heads, or no coverage in certain areas, you'll need to fix that before or during installation. Budget $200 to $800 for sprinkler repairs, or $2,500 to $5,000 for a new system on an average lot.

Drainage Issues

Houston's heavy clay soil (especially in areas like Sugar Land, Missouri City, and Cypress) holds water. If your yard has low spots that pond after rain, you may need French drains or regrading before sod goes down. Standing water kills new sod fast.

Tree Root Competition

If you have mature live oaks, water oaks, or pine trees, their root systems compete aggressively with new sod for water and nutrients. You may need root zone management or should consider shade-tolerant varieties like Palmetto St. Augustine in those areas. This is where having a company that does both tree service and sod installation (like us) pays off — we understand the whole picture.

DIY vs. Professional Installation

Doing it yourself can save roughly 40% of the total cost, since you're cutting out labor. A pallet of St. Augustine sod covers about 450 square feet and runs $180 to $250 from local Houston sod farms.

But here's the reality check:

  • Sod is heavy. A full pallet weighs around 2,000 to 3,000 pounds. You need a way to transport and move it.
  • Timing is critical. Sod must be laid within 24 hours of delivery, especially in Houston's summer heat. If it sits on a pallet, it cooks from the inside out.
  • Soil prep matters more than the sod itself. Skipping grading and amendments leads to uneven lawns, drainage problems, and sod that never roots properly.
  • Mistakes are expensive. If your DIY sod dies because of poor soil prep or inconsistent watering, you're buying everything twice.

For small areas under 1,000 square feet, DIY can make sense. For a full yard, professional installation is almost always worth it.

Best Time to Install for Cost Savings

Spring and early summer are peak sod season in Houston, which means higher demand, tighter schedules, and less room to negotiate on price.

Fall (late September through November) is the sweet spot for savings:

  • Sod farms have more inventory available
  • Crews are less booked, so scheduling is easier
  • Cooler temperatures mean lower water bills during the establishment period
  • New sod still has time to root before winter dormancy

Avoid installing sod in July and August unless absolutely necessary. The heat stress on freshly laid sod is extreme, and your water bill during establishment will be painful.
