Winter Tree Care Tips for Houston Homeowners

While Houston rarely sees harsh winter weather, our cooler months from December through February are actually one of the most important times for tree care. Here's what every Houston homeowner should know about winter tree maintenance.

Why Winter Is Ideal for Tree Work

Houston's winter is the dormant season for most deciduous trees. This makes it the perfect time for:

  • Structural pruning - Without leaves, you can clearly see the tree's branch structure and identify problems
  • Major trimming - Dormant trees experience less stress from pruning
  • Removal - Easier access and less impact on surrounding landscape
  • Planting - New trees planted in winter have months to establish roots before summer heat

Inspect for Storm Damage

December through February is a good time to walk your property and look for:

  • Cracks or splits in main branches or trunks
  • Dead branches that could fall
  • Trees leaning more than they used to
  • Fungal growth on trunks or at the base
  • Damaged or heaving roots

Catching these issues now means you can address them before spring storms arrive.

Mulching

If you haven't already, apply a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch around your trees:

  • Extend mulch to the drip line if possible
  • Keep mulch 6 inches away from the trunk (no volcano mulching!)
  • Use wood chips, shredded bark, or leaves
  • Mulch insulates roots, retains moisture, and improves soil as it decomposes

Watering

Even in winter, Houston trees need water during dry spells. If we go more than two weeks without significant rain:

  • Water deeply around the drip line
  • Focus on newly planted trees and evergreens
  • Water in the morning when temperatures are above freezing

Freeze Preparation

While rare, Houston does occasionally experience hard freezes. Protect your trees by:

  • Watering thoroughly before a predicted freeze (hydrated cells resist cold better)
  • Wrapping the trunks of young or tropical trees with burlap
  • Covering the root zone of sensitive species with extra mulch
  • Avoiding pruning right before a freeze

Plan Ahead for Spring

Winter is the time to schedule spring and summer tree work:

  • Book your trimming appointments early to get preferred scheduling
  • Plan any tree removals before the busy storm season
  • Consider deep root fertilization in late February to fuel spring growth
