How to Spot Oak Wilt in Houston Trees

Oak wilt is one of the most serious tree diseases in Texas, and it's present in the Greater Houston area. This fungal disease can kill a red oak in just a few weeks and slowly decline live oaks over months to years. Early detection is critical.

What Is Oak Wilt?

Oak wilt is caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum. It spreads in two ways:

  1. Underground through interconnected root systems between nearby oaks
  2. Overland by sap-feeding beetles that carry fungal spores from infected trees to fresh wounds on healthy trees

Symptoms in Red Oaks (Water Oaks, Shumard Oaks)

Red oaks are the most susceptible and show symptoms quickly:

  • Rapid leaf discoloration starting at the tips and margins
  • Leaves turn brown from the outside in, often with a pattern of green still visible along the midrib
  • Rapid defoliation - the tree may drop most of its leaves within 2-4 weeks
  • Death can occur within weeks of the first symptoms

Symptoms in Live Oaks

Live oaks decline more slowly but the disease is equally serious:

  • Veinal necrosis - Leaves develop yellow or brown patterns along the veins
  • Leaves may appear mottled or have a tie-dye pattern
  • Gradual defoliation over months
  • Tip dieback starting at the outer canopy
  • Trees may survive for months or even years but continue to decline

What to Do If You Suspect Oak Wilt

  1. Do not prune the affected tree or any nearby oaks
  2. Contact a certified arborist for professional diagnosis
  3. Paint any wounds on nearby healthy oaks immediately (this is the one time wound paint is recommended)
  4. Consider trenching to sever root connections between infected and healthy oaks

Prevention

The best defense against oak wilt:

  • Avoid pruning oaks from February through June when beetles are most active
  • Paint all wounds on oaks immediately, including storm damage
  • Do not move firewood from infected trees
  • Maintain tree health through proper watering and fertilization

Treatment Options

While there is no cure for oak wilt, fungicide injections (propiconazole) can help protect high-value live oaks that are at risk but not yet infected. This treatment must be applied by a professional.

At HamodaTrees, we can assess your oaks for signs of oak wilt and recommend the best course of action. If removal is necessary, we handle it safely and can advise on preventing spread to neighboring trees.
